8 assembly members vying for mayor

Eight members of the four provincial assemblies from across the country have registered their nominations to contest the election of mayor in metropolitan cities and municipalities by resigning from their post. One of them is former minister of provincial government.

UML mayoral candidate of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Keshav Sthapit is one of them who resigned as the member of Bagmati Province Assembly a day before he registered his candidacy.

Sthapit had also served as a Bagmati Province Physical Infrastructure Minister. Alongside him, two other Bagmati Province Assembly members have also resigned for the same purpose.

Bijay Subedi quit the provincial assembly and is now CPN-UML candidate of the mayor in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. Similarly, Prakash Shrestha also resigned and has registered his candidacy for the mayor of Nagarjun Municipality. Subedi and Shrestha are also CPN-UML candidates.

Similarly, two provincial assembly members from Province 1 have resigned to contest as mayoral candidates. Gopal Chandra Budhathoki, who got elected from Jhapa 1(B) from CPN-UML, and Kaji Man Kagate, elected from Ilam 1(B) from CPN-UML, resigned.

Issuing two separate notices on Sunday, Province 1 Assembly Secretariat informed that the duo’s resignation was received.

Budhathoki has filed his nomination for the mayoral candidate of Mechi Municipality of Jhapa and Kagate is running for the mayor of Suryodaya Municipality in Ilam as CPN-UML candidate.

Likewise, two assembly members from Madhes Province have also become mayoral candidates after resigning from the provincial assembly.

Sheikh Abul Kalam Azad aka Phool Babu and Upendra Prasad Kuswaha have resigned as the Madhes Province Assembly members.

Azad had won the provincial elections from Rautahat 4(B) as an independent candidate but later joined Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N). He is contesting for the post of mayor of Gadhimai Municipality from JSP-N.

Likewise, Kuswaha, who got elected from Sarlahi 4(B) from Nepali Congress (NC), resigned to compete for the mayor of Godaita Municipality of Sarlahi district as an NC candidate.

In Gandaki, Provincial Assembly member Krishna Thapa also resigned and registered his nomination for the post of mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City as a CPN-UML candidate.

Several other provincial assembly members from different provinces had also planned to resign but did not as they were not made candidates by their parties.

Asha Koirala, a Gandaki Provincial Assembly member from CPN (Maoist Centre), had also expressed her desire to run for the mayor of Shuklagandaki Municipality of Tanahu district. However, the coalition decided to field Nepali Congress candidate as the mayor and a CPN (Maoist-Centre) was given the post of deputy-mayor. Koirala denied contesting for the post of deputy mayor.

Similarly, Bindu Kumar Thapa, a Gandaki Provincial Assembly member from NC, had also proposed to stand as the mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City. However, when the coalition decided to field CPN (Unified-Socialist) candidate in Pokhara, he did not have to resign.
