The number of road accidents has come down after the Dhalkewar-Janakpur-Jatahi road in Dhanusha was made safe by widening and adopting safety measures.
The road has been upgraded to six lanes, with three lanes for coming and another three for going.
A divider has been constructed at the middle and RCC and GI pipes have been laid on both sides of the road. Separate bridges have been constructed for separate lanes. The road is considered to be one of the best and safest roads in the country.
According to the District Traffic Police Office, Dhanusha, 817 road accidents were recorded in the district from mid-July 2021 to mid-April 2022, out of which 455 took place on rural roads. There were 291 accidents on the East-West and Dhalkewar-Janakpur highways and 71 in urban areas.
The number of deaths due to road accidents is also higher along the rural roads. According to the traffic police, 47 people were killed on rural roads, 42 on highways, and five in urban areas.
Dhanusha District Traffic Police Office Chief Police Inspector Chandra Bhushan Yadav said that the number of road accidents on the Dhalkewar-Janakpur road has decreased compared to other highways and rural roads.
He said that the regular presence of the traffic police has also played a huge role in lowering the number of accidents.
Vehicles coming from the opposite direction are not likely to collide as there are separate road lanes. This is an example of how accidents can be reduced if the road is wide and good, said Inspector Yadav. He added that despite the increase in the number of vehicles, the number of accidents has decreased due to better roads.
The construction work of the first phase of the Janakpur-Jatahi six-lane road started in 2015 and now has been completed. Railings, poles, and drains were installed in the second phase, which began in 2017 at Sapahi, Pidari Chowk, Ramananda Chowk, and Zeromile.
