The school administration has been finding it difficult to run regular classes at Netra Jyoti Secondary School in Jumla after the sediments brought by floods last week caused damages to the school buildings and furniture.
The school located at Tatopani Rural Municipality-4 is now covered with sediments. The rain-induced floods caused a damage worth Rs. 16.6 million, including to a concrete building.
Jajalya Raj Neupane, headmaster of the school, said 500 metre compound area, school building with 80 desks and benches were swept away by the floods.
Neupane worried about how they could resume classes in absence of school building and furniture.
Bijaya Prasai, chairman of the District Disaster Management Committee and Chief District Officer said that an initiative was taken to reconstruct the damaged school building.
A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee also discussed about the alternative management of the school’s building for now. He further said that coordination and discussions were beinag held with the governmental and non-governmental bodies and local level on the issue of school reconstruction.
Like Netra Jyoti Secondary School, other schools have also been affected by floods in Jumla. Recently, a team including Chief District Officer Bijaya Prasai and the municipality’s chairman Nawaraj Neupane returned to district headquarters after inspecting the school.
Chairman Neupane informed that all-round initiative was being taken to run classes smoothly by managing the building. According to him, a three-room building of Janajagriti Higher Secondary School in Tatopani was also swept away by the flood.
Likewise, playground of Kalika Higher Secondary School, Tatopani, was also damaged by the floods. He also informed that damages were inflicted on the power house, roads, drinking water and health facilities.
In Tatopani, 117 sheep, 140 to 150 kilowatts of hydro power projects and 13 wooden bridges were washed away. Likewise, lift irrigation worth Rs. 4 million also suffered a massive damage.
Besides, the rains caused a heavy loss to paddy.
