Decision about extension of lockdown most likely to be made today

A decision to prolong (or complete) Nepal’s nationwide lockdown is most likely to be made today.

PM Oli has called for a ministerial meeting at his residence in Baluwatar at 2 p.m. The PM is also expected to make an address to the nation.

As per sources, the Council of Ministers will be advising the government to extend the lockdown – most probably for another week. The government had announced a national lockdown on March 24, initially for a week, but later extended until April 7, midnight.

However, the Ministry of Health and Population and other advisory bodies have advised the government to increase the lockdown – with a special focus on Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province after four cases, which includes a domestic transmission was found in the province.

Similarly, the government is also expected to begin Rapid Diagnostics Tests (RDTs) in Kanchanpur, Kailali and Baglung districts at the earliest.
