DNA of accused murderer matches with Bhagirathi’s vaginal swab

The DNA of Dinesh Bhatta, main accused in the rape and subsequent murder of 17-year-old Bhagirathi Bhatta of Dogadakedar, Baitadi, has matched with the victim’s vaginal swab, according to police.

The DNA match is evidential to corroborate Dinesh’s involvement in the crime.

The DNA test was conducted at the Kathmandu-based Forensic Laboratory. “Bhagirathi’s blood sample, vaginal swab sample, and DNA report have matched with Dinesh Bhatta,” informed Sudurpaschim Province police chief DIG Uttam Subedi.”

“All evidences so far confirms Dinesh’s involvement in Bhagirathi’s rape and murder. We are satisfied with the investigation and findings,” he added.

The district court in Baitadi had sent 16-year-old Dinesh to a juvenile correctional center for further action after he confessed to have committed the crime. He, however, changed his statement later and denied his involvement in the crime.

His father, Deepak Raj, had said a few days ago that his son was coerced and trapped into giving false confession.

Bhagirathi was found raped and murdered on February 4, a day after she went missing on her way home from school.

Her body was found in a bush in Lawalek forest, some 30 metres below the Khochlek-Giregada road section.

Police had made Dinesh public as the prime suspect amid a press conference 13 days after the incident.
