A doctor employed at the Subash Medical located at Dhankuta-7, Dr Raj Sharma, was arrested on Monday, on the charge of sexually assaulting a patient.
DSP Deepak Kumar Rai of the District Police Office said that Sharma was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed at the Police Office accusing the doctor of sexually assaulting a 53-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital for urinary problems.
Sharma of Khariya-12, Biratnagar Metropolitan City had been working as a doctor at a private hospital in Dhankuta for the past few years.
According to DSP Rai, initial investigation has confirmed that Sharma had sexually assaulted the patient at the hospital on Sunday at around 10:30 pm under the influence of alcohol. Dr Sharma, on other hand, has accused the patient of misbehaving with him.
Meanwhile, a 37-year-old father and a 32-year-old uncle of Palungtar Municipality in Gorkha district have been arrested on the charge of raping their daughter.
The incident came to light after the survivor visited a local health facility for check-up owing to her deteriorating health. Both the accused were arrested on August 6 and presented in the District Court on Sunday.
They have been kept in detention for further investigation.
According to DSP Prakash Dahal of District Police Office, Gorkha, the 37-year-old father had been raping his daughter for the past two years. As per the complaint filed at the District Police Office, the survivor’s 32-year-old uncle had first raped her in October 2020.
After the survivor fell severely ill in April, she was treated at a local hospital. However, she was rushed to the Thapathali-based Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital in Kathmandu on July 11, accompanied by her aunt (father’s sister), after her health deteriorated.
It was only after the Kathmandu-based hospital diagnosed a problem in the girl’s uterus, the survivor told her aunt that she was raped by her father and uncle.
Following which, the survivor’s aunt filed the police complaint.
In another grim incident of violence against women and girls, a man from Dailekh ran away after torturing his pregnant wife accusing her of being possessed by a deity.
Hastana Damai has sustained serious injuries after her husband Deepak Nepali of Gaurisalla-5, Bhairavi Village Municipality in Dailkeh poured boiling water on her and burned her with firewood.
26-year-old Hastana, who is four months pregnant, is currently undergoing treatment at the District Hospital, Dailekh. “I ran away asking for help when my husband started pouring hot water on my back and face and burned me with firewood accusing me of being possessed by a deity,” she said.
Severely injured Hastana was rushed to a local hospital by her neighbor. After learning about the incident, the police took her to Dailekh Hospital for further treatment.
According to Dr Jagat Thapa of Dailekh Hospital, 13 percent of Hastana’s body has been burnt. “Hastana’s health is improving and out-of-risk. Her treatment is possible here,” said Dr Thapa.
The District Police Office, Dailekh, later arrested Deepak and has secured a court order to remand him in 10-day custody for further investigation into the case.
According to Dailekh Police Chief Anupam Shrestha, Deepak and Hastana had married five years ago and they have two children.
