Dr Govind KC, who had earlier announced a hunger strike from August 28, has postponed his strike for two weeks, drawing the government’s attention to his demands, and make appropriate reforms within the medical sector.
Presenting a six-point demand forward, Dr KC had earlier informed that he would go on a hunger strike from today.
Dr KC, organising a press conference in Kathmandu on Sunday, announced that he would postpone his Satyagraha movement for two weeks saying the government has asked for some time to work according to the demands put forward by Dr KC.
“We had expectations that the new government, under Sher Bahadur Deuba, would be able to bring some positive changes but instead the Deuba-led government has taken steps towards diminishing medical services in Nepal,” said KC.
Dr KC informed that they had unofficial meetings with representatives of government who urged to provide government some time. However, KC informs that if all those demands are not addressed, the Satyagraha hunger strike will begin from 12 September.
The demands put forward by Dr KC team are: to improve health services; increase capacity and upgrade quality of all the government hospitals in the country; umbrella law regarding health science institutes; legal arrangements to prevent conflict of interests among staffers of medical institutes; law regarding criteria for appointing staffers of medical institutes and universities; arrangement to make system of Nepal’s medical educational institutions non-profit within 2028; legal arrangements for the wide use and expansion of electric vehicles.
