The Election Commission has expanded online registration for voter’s roll with photographs in five more districts after the successful implementation of the service in three districts of the Kathmandu Valley.
The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday decided to expand the service in Jhapa, Morang, Kavre, Kaski and Chitwan districts to simplify the voter’s registration process, said EC’s under-secretary Surya Prasad Aryal.
Aryal said the service would come into effect in the five districts from Wednesday. “From Wednesday onward, all eligible citizens of these districts can fill up the online form for getting registered in the voters’ list,” he said.
According to the EC, daily 250 people of the five districts get registered on the voter’s list through online, while in three districts of the Kathmandu Valley daily 500 people can get online registration.
The EC developed a web-based voter list pre-registration system to make it easy for the eligible citizens for getting registered as voters. The system was launched in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur districts on July 14 as a pilot project. The EC has decided to expand the service after it succeeded in the three districts, said Aryal.
People can visit the EC’s website, www.election.gov.np and fill up the online form and then visit the district election office with the print copy of the submitted form with the symbol number and other related documents to get a photo and fingerprint taken.
Once the photo and fingerprint are taken at the district election office, the process for getting registered as a voter completes
According to the EC, so far around 2,000 people have already registered their names in voter’s roll online while around 4,900 people, who registered the online form, have been waiting for their appointment to submit their biometric and required documents to complete the registration process.
The EC has begun compiling the electoral roll from mid-June for the federal and provincial level elections proposed to be held in the third week of November later this year.
To ease the migrated voters, the EC had decided to accept the application of the citizen from the District Administration Office, Area Administration Office and District Election Office, which is accessible for the citizens.
