Ensure equal access to facilities for disabled: President

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has stressed the need for identifying persons with disabilities, who are deprived of education, health and employment facilities and ensuring them equal access to the facilities and opportunities provided by the state.

In a message issued on the occasion of the 31st International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Saturday, President Bhandari called for effective implementation of constitutional and legal provisions to ensure equal facilities and opportunities to the persons with disabilities.

Stating that the Constitution has ensured rights of the persons with disabilities to live with dignity and self-respect along with identity, President Bhandari called for coordination among the social organisations and concerned agencies to implement the constitutional provisions and bring about uniformity in service delivery.

The President also reminded the constitutional guidance which provides non-discriminatory opportunities for the persons with disabilities, in all spheres of the state and equal access to public services and facilities in accordance to proportional, inclusive and participatory principles.

“Initiated three decades ago by the United Nations to promote and protect the rights of the persons with disabilities, this Day encourages the persons with disabilities to contribute to the mainstream of national development through inclusive development, building accessible physical infrastructure, participation and leadership development,” she added.

President Bhandari has extended her best wishes urging the stakeholders to build a civilised society by changing people’s perspective towards the persons living with disabilities.

President Bhandari also asked the three-tier governments and all concerned authorities to ensure facilities in the places like workplaces, educational institutions, public vehicles, roads, parks, monasteries and temples for the people with disabilities.
