The construction of Nepal’s first overpass has started at Gwarko Chowk in Lalitpur today December 9, 2022.
Until the construction period, heavy vehicles including public buses, load-carrying vehicles and bikes passing through Gwarko road will have to take diversions through the service lane from Balkumari Bridge.
Meanwhile, cars will be allowed on the fast-track ring road.
Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has placed diversions to ensure the overpass construction goes smoothly.
The 455-meter long flyover will connect B & B Hospital area through Gwarko Chowk to Balkumari of Lalitpur stretch of the valley ring road.
The overpass will be 35 metres long and going be built on four lanes of the ring road. A 280-metre ramp will be constructed from the Balkumari side while a 175-metre ramp will be constructed from the Satdobato side.
DoR believes that the overpass, which will be made parallel to the four lanes of the ring road, will reduce the traffic jam at Gwarko Chok.
After the construction of the overpass, the vehicles plying the Imadol-Patan road will pass through the existing ring road under the overpass.
Department of Road (DoR) provided the contact to Ashish Samanantar Religare JV, and has informed the cost of construction of the flyover would be around Rs 176.88 million.
As per the contract, the construction company had to develop a design in four months and complete the construction within 20 months.
However, the designing and engineering process took 10 months which means that the company only has 14 more months to complete the construction in the provided time period.
