‘Govt should be sensitive to issues of people with disabilities’

Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi has said all three tiers of governments should be sensitive to the issues of people with disabilities (PWDs).

At a programme organized by the National Disable Fund on the occasion of 31st International Day of Persons with Disabilities here today, Minister Regmi said the local government should be more responsible and sensitive for service delivery to the PWDs in the remote areas.

The federal and province governments are required to work by allocating budget to work for the cause of people with physical disabilities, Minister Regmi added.

On the occasion, she said that the ministry is serious to the concerns raised about the negligence of the local levels regarding the services and facilities to the PWDs.

During the programme, Member of the National Assembly and Chair of Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee Prakash Pantha said the Fund should give priority for the development of support materials to those with physical disabilities.

The local governments should supply the support materials to the PWDs at their doorsteps, Pantha said adding that complaints are there regarding poor service delivery from the local governments.

Pantha also expressed concerns over the misuse of identity cards given to the people with disabilities in recent days.

Ministry’s Secretary Dilliram Sharma, Fund’s President Dekraj Bhattarai and others also expressed their views for deeper cooperation among three tiers of governments to ensure more supports to the PWDs and reduce their woes. (RSS)
