Yak, the shaggy-haired Himalayan cow, and other cattle taken to the high pasture land during mid-May for grazing have been brought down to the villages of Limi after the high land started receiving snow.
Karsang Tamang of Namkha Rural Municipality-6 informed that this year, the yaks and cattle were brought to the lower villages earlier than the past due to early snowfall.
He said due to fall in temperature and early snowfall in the Himalayas, the yaks and cattle were brought down three weeks earlier than the previous years. In the past years, they used to bring back the animals only around mid-November.
The animals were taken to the high pasture land located at an altitude of 4,200 metres in May. Now, after the high land has been covered by two to five feet thick snow, they were taken down.
The animals have been brought down to Til, Halji and Jang villages of Limi. Nearly 232 yaks of the Limi Yak Source Centre, 300 yaks of local villagers and 250 other cattle were taken to the lower villages from the high pasture land.
Paljor Tamang, ward chair of Limi, informed that the cattle from Lapcha and the Ling Khola areas were brought down to Limi.
The farmers said that they would face difficulty in finding grassland for the cattle after the snowfall. The farmers carried the dairy products like ghee and chhurpi produced in six months while grazing the cattle in the high pasture land along with the cattle.
After descending to the lower areas, they will start selling the goods in the local markets.
