Important Meetings Held With World Leaders


Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is returning home today after successfully leading the Nepali delegation to World Leaders Summit of the 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

The COP26 was held in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 1 and 2.
As informed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, PM Deuba will be landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport today at 8:30 a.m. via flight number QR 652 of Qatar Airways.
Addressing the World Leaders Summit on November 2, PM Deuba raised concerns about the impact of climate change on the Himalayan Region.

He also asserted giving a place to the issue of loss and damages caused by climate-induced disasters under Article 4.8 of the Convention and announced that Nepal aimed to reach a net-zero emission by 2045 by ensuring that 15 per cent of the total energy demand is supplied from clean energy sources and maintain 45 per cent of the country under forest cover by 2030.

Similarly, on the sideline of COP26, PM Deuba held a meeting with various world leaders including Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. He informed that the PM of India would visit Nepal shortly. Talking to the media, Deuba had informed that he had invited PM Modi to visit Nepal.

Minister for Forests Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bharat Raj Poudyal, Dr. Durga Bahadur Chhetri, Foreign Minister of India Jay Shankar, and Secretary Harshvardhan Shrungala were also present in the meeting.
Similarly, Deuba and President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksha also held a meeting during the sideline where they discussed strengthening the friendly relations between both the nations and promoting tourism of both the nations in cooperation with each other.

On Tuesday, PM Deuba also met general secretary of the International Maritime Organisation Kitack Lim. During the meeting, Lim said that Nepal could also take benefit of the apt new opportunities available in the marine area. “I see high employment opportunities for Nepalis in cruises,” he said, adding that he would provide scholarships to Nepalis to study in the International Maritime University in Sweden and International Maritime Institute in Malta. PM Deuba also expressed his gratitude to general secretary Lim.

Moreover, PM Deuba also held talks with Prime Minister of the UK Boris Johnson. He talked about the conservation of forests of Nepal and the utilisation of land with his UK counterpart.
As PM Johnson was curious to know more about the efforts made by Nepal for the conservation of forests and the impact it has made on minimising carbon emissions, PM Deuba said, “Works are being done to restructure 45 per cent of the forest areas which have been destroyed over the years.”

PM Deuba also talked to Mari Pangestu, executive director at the World Bank, and Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General.
