Continuous rainfall continues to affect the nation – rivers have swollen prompting authorities to issue ‘high alert’ notice to residents living close to rivers, landslides have blocked many crucial highways, and travelers are being advised to be aware of road and weather conditions prior to making their journey, and many settlements and low lying areas are inundated as rain batters.
According to an update by Nepal Police, on 12th July alone, 21 people lost their lives to monsoon related disasters, 10 were injured, 10 reported missing, whereas 50 were safely evacuated. The monsoon rains that lashed 21 districts as of Friday displaced 1,175 individuals of 435 households, according to the report.
The monsoon rains have mainly affected the districts of Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, Panchthar, Khotang, Bhojpur, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchowk, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Makwanpur, Dhading, and Ilam. Three family members of a single household died when a house caved-in at Kageshwori Manahara Municipality in Mulpani of Kathmandu on Friday evening, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hobindra Bogati.
An excavator was pressed into action to clear the debris and pull out the bodies, according to the police.
The deceased have been identified as Natu Yadav, Sharmila Yadav and 10-year old Kundan Yadav. Two persons were killed and two others were injured when landslide debris fell on a thatched roof house of an earthquake victim in Banepa-3 in Kavre district Friday afternoon, according to the police headquarters news bulletin section. The deceased have been identified as 55-year old Goma Dangal, and seven-year old Sohani Dangal. In the incident, Sushila Dangal, 30, and a 3-month infant Anushka were injured, according to the police.
In Ramechhap, 45-year Padam Kumari Sunuwar, a permanent resident of Rampur, was killed when she was buried under landslide debris. Also, 66-year old Jagat Bahadur Rai, a permanent resident of Ram Prasad Rai Rural Municipality-7, died when a collapsed wall hit him after incessant rain in Bhojpur on Friday. Hem Kumar Sunar in Sindhuli was also buried under landslide debris.
Also, at Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality-9 in Bhojpur district, 14-year old Janak B.K was killed when the toilet caved in after landslide debris fell on it. He was buried under the debris along with the toilet and died on the spot, according to local Anil Kumar Rai.
In Lalitpur district, Saroj Tamang died when his thatched roof house was swept away by flood, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Similarly, three persons were killed when a landslide buried them in Khotehang Rural Municipality-2 in Khotang district. The deceased were identified as Rekha Rai, 27, Roman Rai, 4, and seven-month boy Rohan Rai.
Also, a man went missing in Jaleshwore when he was swept away by the Rato River, according to DSP Madhav Prasad Budhathoki. He was identified as 70-year old Hanif Baitha, a permanent resident of Balawa Municipality-2 of Mahottari district.
A child was swept away by floods at Parshagadhi Municipality-1 in Parsa district. The deceased was identified as Nikhil Patel, police said. The 10-year old boy was swept away by the flood while he was collecting firewood in the Singyahi River.
Likewise, Sanchana Balami, a permanent resident of Thaha Municipality-3 in Makwanpur district, died when she was swept away by the Mahabhir River. Her body was recovered some four metres away and was rushed to nearby hospital but was declared dead, according to the Area Police Office, Palung.
Meteorologists have asked the people to stay alert from probable disasters and keep oneself safe from the rain forecasting that monsoon would be active for two more days.
