Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today inaugurated the drive to lay electrical, telephone and internet cables underground in the Kathmandu Valley.
The first phase of the campaign will begin from areas under the Ratnapark and Maharajgunj-based distribution centres of Nepal Electricity Authority.
Baluwatar, Panipokhari, Budhanilakantha, Tokha, Gongabu, Samakushi, Dhapasi, Basundhara, Shivapuri, Chunikhel, Sukedhara, Dharmasthali and Teaching Hospital area fall under the Maharajgunj distribution centre.
These areas will have underground wires of 11,000-voltage and a 400-voltage along with 250 km of optical fibres.
Similarly, Ratnapark, Bagbazaar, Putalisadak, New Road, Anamnagar, Jamal, Lainchaur, Thamel, Naxal, Sorhakhutte, Tripureshwor, Teku, Thapathali, Maitighar, Singhadurbar, Lazimpat, Gaushala, Airport, Baneshwor, Chabahil, Bouddha and Jorpati fall under the Ratnapark distribution centre.
These areas will have underground wires of 11,000-voltage in 200 km vicinity and 400-voltage in 400 km vicinity.
The underground electricity cables, once laid, are expected to minimize visual pollution in the valley.
Speaking on the occasion, PM Oli asked why the media were only publishing photos of him playing basuri (flute) despite his government doing other commendable jobs.
He added that though the drive to lay underground wires had begun from Maharajgunj area, it would gradually be launched across the country.
The prime minister also said that the country will be exporting electricity within the next two-three years.
Pledging to stop the rampant brain drain from the country, PM Oli added that all migrant workers employed in various countries will be brought back to Nepal.
