KMC Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) has intensified crackdown against encroached parking spaces and other illegal structures in Kathmandu Metropolitan City. After overseeing demolition of illegal structures at Kathmandu Mall and surrounding areas on Wednesday, he reached Baneshwor area on Thursday morning to assess encroached parking spaces and other illegal structures.
In the morning, he reached Alfa Beta Complex in Baneshwor asking building owners to remove a pharmacy which had been illegally built in the complex. When representatives of the building asked for a notice period, Mayor Shah directed them towards an earlier newspaper release from KMC which had instructed building owners to remove such structures within 35 days.
Meanwhile, in the afternoon a KMC dozer, with Mayor Shah holding the complex’s blueprint, arrived at the venue again to oversee demolition of the structure.
Lack of designated parking facilities has been a perennial problem within Kathmandu Valley, especially in KMC. Ex-KMC mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya during his tenure had made tall claims about developing several multi-storeyed parking facilities within the metropolitan area, however, they failed to materialize.
Mayor Shah’s step to free up available parking spaces while removing illegal structures within the metropolitan area has been met with great enthusiasm, and offers respite to a great extent for commuters.
