Senior citizens of Limi, a rural village in Namkha Rural Municipality-6, Humla, have been unable to receive their monthly social security allowance of the fiscal year 2021/22. Though the municipality has already deposited the amount of allowance by opening the bank account of the service recipients, Limi elderlies find it hard to travel to Simkot, the district headquarters, to withdraw it.
Konjyok Nima Tamang of Limi Halji village said that he had not received the social security allowance of the previous fiscal year.
The 77-year-old said that the employees and people’s representatives earlier used to reach their village to distribute the allowance but that was not the case this year.
Tamang requested the local government to provide the facility in the village itself.
Though three months have passed since the beginning of the new financial year, they were still waiting for the allowance of the previous fiscal year, he said. Paljor Tamang, ward chairman of Limi, said that the rural municipality had already deposited the allowance in the bank account of the beneficiaries. He said that senior citizens aged 70-80 years couldn’t travel to Yalwang or Simkot to receive the allowance.
“Depositing the allowance in the bank account of the beneficiaries is good for transparency, but it is not practical for the elderly to walk a long distance to reach the bank,” said Tamang.
“It is the time to get the allowance for the first quarter of the current financial year. However, the elderlies of the village are still waiting for the allowance of the previous year. This is very disappointing,” he added.
Municipality Chairman Prem Lama said that since the senior citizen of Limi could not make a grueling journey to reach the bank, the rural municipality had requested the bank to reach the village to distribute the allowance.
However, they balked at reaching the village, citing security concerns, he added.
According to the rural municipality, there are 250 people in the village who are eligible to get all sorts of social security allowances.
The rural municipality has already deposited Rs.31,700,000 rupees to the beneficiaries bank account, said Lama.
