Eight families of Bhajani Municipality-7 Himmatpur in Kailali district have been displaced after the flooded Mohana River started cutting its embankment. The river has swelled after an incessant rainfall.
The families have become homeless after the rising water level in river put the human settlement at risk. They have been forced to take temporary shelters in a nearby forest.
Flood-affected Kishan Chaudhary said that they had to relocate their houses after the river put their life at risk.
The whole village is at risk due to the erosion of the embankment.
Local Challu Chaudhary said that they were preparing to leave the house as the river has reached near the house.
In the past, the Mohana River was away from the village. Erosion was on control but in the past few days, a massive flood in the river followed by a heavy rain has been cutting the embankment of the river.
The locals had traditionally built earthen dams on the river banks to protect the village. But that was damaged by the recent flood.
The locals had sought help from various agencies to build permanent embankments on the river. They also shared their concerns with former minister and suspended lawmaker Gauri Shankar Chaudhary.
“He had promised to take initiative with the federal government for the construction of the embankment,” said Balkishan Chaudhary of Himmatpur.
He urged the local government to take initiative to control erosion and arrange proper settlement for the homeless people. “We have already submitted an application to the ward office,” he said.
