More than 5 million anti-COVID vaccines at risk of expiration as people lack willingness to get additional dose

More than 5 million vaccines against COVID-19 remain at the storage of health facilities in different provinces as people are disinterested to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to the data of the Department of Health Services (DoHS), a total of 5,763,411 doses of anti-COVID-19 vaccines are in stock.

There are 4,363,982 doses of Vero Cell; 34,245 of Johnson&Johnson; 711,344 of Pfizer Tris; and 653,840 of Pfizer Pediatric vaccines stored at 10 different vaccine storage facilities across Nepal.

Although the daily vaccine reports are not updated since September 13, Dr Bibek Kumar Lal, Director of the Department of Health Services informs that the vaccination campaign has been going slow since the cases have subsided significantly.

He said, “The vaccines in the stock can cover people who have missed their jabs. The currently stored vaccines will expire by end of November.”

Dr Sher Bahadur Pun of Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital in Teku, informs the risk of contracting COVID-19 still remains and 100 percent vaccination rate of the nation is the best way to be safe from COVID-19.

Though the daily cases have reduced significantly, Nepal still registers an average of 10 new COVID-19 cases daily with 572 active cases on November 8.

“Even those who have taken two doses of vaccination should not miss additional doses against COVID-19,” said Pun.

A total number of 7,972,791 are to get additional doses.
