The story of the atrocities committed by Nepali Congress lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam is horrifying – unimaginable. He has been accused of murdering several people by burning them alive in brick kiln – an investigation by Nepal Police has concluded the same.
A team of Nepal Police investigating the case Alam has submitted the report to the Government Attorney Office, and have recommended filing three charges against him – murder, attempt to murder, and explosions of bomb.
The investigation team gathered the details from the persons injured in the bomb blasts, the family of the deceased in the blast, the then police officers, medical report of injured persons, the tractor used in the incident and the version of witnesses as evidences against the accused. Police Superintendent Bhupendra Khatri said that the investigation of police had proven the involvement of lawmaker Alam in the bomb blast in Rajpur 12 years ago.
What is the incident?
The incident, a harrowing episode in the history of Rautahat district occurred 12 years ago – a day ahead of the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections. According to media reports, bomb makers imported from India were building bombs in a home belonging to a relative of Alam. Reports suggest he intended to ‘take control’ over polling booths the next day by bombing areas surrounding the booth. Unfortunately, a bomb went off, and several people were killed and injured (media reports on the exact death toll vary).
It is alleged, Alam then ordered all injured and the deceased to be taken to a brick kiln and burnt – to completely remove all evidences pertaining to the incident. They were accordingly loaded in a tractor, burnt, and the brick kiln demolished.
The family of Trilok Pratap Singh and Oshi Akhtar, who died in the bomb blast, had filed a case against Alam and other five persons. Akhtar’s mother, Ruksana was found dead with a bullet in her head a few days later.
As the years progressed, and the case stalled, Alam once again contested from Rautahat 2 for a seat to the HoR in the 2017 legislative election, and won.
After a Supreme Court order to uphold earlier court directives, police took Alam under custody 20 days ago at Pipara Bhagawanpur of Rautahat district.
According to the police, the evidence they have collected is incriminating – a court will now decide the fate of Alam.
