Nepali Army has issued a series of statements dismissing fake news report in circulation within Indian Media, and has urged Nepali public to be mindful of other reports.
On 27th May, 2020, Hindustan Times published an article “In huge setback to PM Oli, Nepal’s new political map hits a roadblock” and on 28th May, 2020, TFIPost published an article “Oli ordered Nepal Chief of Army to rebut Indian Army Chief’s remarks, the Nepalese General said ‘no thanks'”.
In both reports, the media outlets have alleged that Chief of the Nepali Army, Gen. Purna Chandra Thapa refused to obey the instructions of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli – with the TFI further speculating that Gen. Thapa refused to obey the instructions because he is also an Honorary Indian Army General.
(It is a customary practice between the Armies of Nepal and India to award the honorary General title to each other’s Army Chiefs)
The articles allege General Thapa refused PM Oli’s request to respond to remarks made by Indian Army Chief. Nepali Army has therefore dismissed the reports, saying:
“Nepali Army does function well within the parameters of the constitution, and maintains its glorious tradition of discipline, restrain and accountability, and respect towards the highest executive office in the country”.
Furthermore the report also states that Nepali Army does not consider making political statements, or responding to loaded media queries a part of its job.
Nepali Army has requested the public to not fall for such baseless media allegations, and Nepalese Voice reiterates the same.
