Newly elected lawmakers to be administered oath of office today


Newly elected members of the House of Representatives (HoR) will be administered the oath of office and secrecy on Thursday. The swearing-in ceremony for the new members in the HoR will take place at 1:00 pm in the Parliament building in New Baneshwar, Federal Parliament Secretariat informed.

The constitutional provision requires every member of the Federal Parliament to take the oath of office and secrecy as provided in the law before taking part in the meeting of the Parliament or its committees for the first time. As per the constitutional provision, the senior-most (by age) member should take an oath from the President before administrating the oath to other members.

The President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to the senior-most member of the Lower House, Pashupati Sumsher JBR of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, on Wednesday. Pashupati Sumsher JBR will administer the oath of office to other members of the House.

The Parliament Secretariat has also asked the members of the House willing to take the oath in their mother tongues to provide translation of the oath in their language of choice. The Secretariat has urged all the elected members to be present in the swearing-in ceremony with the certificates of the election, a photocopy of the Nepali citizenship and two recent passport size photos. They are requested to wear the national dress or the attire that reflects their culture.

The 275-member House is represented by 12 political parties and five independent members. Meanwhile, the provincial assembly members of Province 1 will take their oath on Monday. Issuing a notice on Tuesday, the Provincial Assembly Secretariat said that the newly elected members of the provincial legislature would be administered their oath of office and secrecy on Monday at 1.30 pm.

According to our Biratnagar correspondent, the assembly members are required to bring their certificate of election, citizenship certificate and two passport size photos.
