New South Wales has announced its decision to charge a mandatory hotel quarantine fee for all international arrivals arriving from 12:01am Saturday, 18 July.
Travellers who purchased their flights before 11:59pm 12 July AEST will be excluded from quarantine fees though. However, conditions will apply and travellers will have to provide evidence.
The decision has come after NSW government said it has spent AUD 65 million on quarantine accommodation to house international travellers returning to Australia. The quarantine fee will help reduce financial burden of COVID-19 on NSW taxpayers.
The hotel quarantine fee is a fixed cost which includes meals and hotel room costs.
- Travellers will be charged $3,000 for one adult; additional occupants can be added as follows:
- Additional adults: $1000 each
- Additional children: $500 each
- Child under 3: no additional cost
- For example a family of 2 adults and 2 children over the age of 3 in one room would pay $5000.
- For example a family of 2 adults and 4 children over the age of 3 would pay $6000.
The travellers will recieve an invoice at the end of their stay, and will have to pay the NSW government within 30 days.
The NSW government will also make provisions for claiming financial hardship.
