The Government of Germany handed over more than 4.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Nepal on Thursday.
Chargé d’ Affaires of the German Embassy Dr. Stephan Russek handed the consignment of vaccines to Minister for Health and Population Birodh Khatiwada.
Nepal received a package of 4,142,250 doses of COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) companies under the COVAX facility. Among the received vaccines, 1,965,600 doses of Moderna’s and 2,176,650 of J&J’s.
While receiving the vaccine, Minister Khatiwada said that the vaccines would support the government in vaccinating the people against the pandemic.
Minister Khatiwada lauded the assistance of Germany in launching and institutionalising health insurance in the country, building of hospitals and health facilities and institutionalising health information system.
On the occasion, the German Chargé d’ Affaires said the German government had been assisting Nepal in education and health sectors, and that the vaccine assistance would help protect Nepalis from the pandemic.
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Dr. Sangeeta Kaushal Mishra, said the Moderna vaccines would be given to children aged 12 to 17 years from December 19 to 27.
The government will administer the vaccines to children at their schools in 57 districts. The J&J vaccines would be given to those people going abroad and to other target populations.
