The government is preparing to import 50,000 metric tonnes of salt and sugar ahead of the upcoming Dashain-Tihar festival followed by a 50 per cent exemption on customs.
According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply, the government-owned Food Management & Trading Company Limited and Salt Trading are preparing to bring in that amount of sugar and salt at a customs discount.
“We are going to bring 10,000 metric tonnes of subsidised salt and 40,000 metric tonnes of sugar,” a Commerce Ministry source said.
India has currently banned the export of sugar, and the domestic price of sugar has now reached Rs 110 per kg. According to the ministry, a proposal has been sent to bring sugar and sell it at a discounted price to consumers during the festival.
