President stresses tiger conservation

President Bidya Devi Bhandari expressed her best wishes to all concerned for the conservation of tigers. World Tiger Day is being marked on July 29 with the theme “Tiger Conservation for Healthy Ecosystems” across the globe.

About a decade ago, at the World Tiger Conference held in St. Petersburg, Russia, Nepal made a commitment to double the number of tigers by the year 2020. Acting on that commitment, the country was able to increase the number to 235 in 2018. And as it is currently aiming to achieve its target, the country’s priority in tiger conservation is being appreciated worldwide, President Bhandari said. It is a matter of happiness that Nepal has succeeded in creating a positive identity in the world in the conservation of rare wild animal species, including tigers.

President Bhandari said that the development of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries across the country has helped to protect the habitat of tigers. The role played by the related organisations of Nepal to control poaching of tigers and illegal trade of their parts has helped to make the initiative of global tiger conservation worthwhile.

In order to implement the existing policy and legal system in the field of wildlife conservation as an integral part of nature conservation, the sustainable activism of everyone is necessary, she said. With the increase in the number of

tigers, the possibility of human-wildlife conflicts has also increased, so the concerned parties should pay attention to the expansion of the forest area where the tigers roam, she added. “Both tiger conservation and increase in its number is important for tourism promotion and economic development of Nepal,” she said, urging the related agencies, public and conservation workers to continue their effort by adopting the latest conservation measures.

“Finally, I believe that World Tiger Day will inspire everyone to continue more energetically in protecting the rare wild animal, which contributes to the creation of a healthy ecological system and to protecting biological diversity in order to cushion the negative impacts of climate change,” she said.
