Saptari sees rise in violence against women

Incidents of domestic violence have increased lately in Saptari district. Victims and rights activists have complained that the police and the concerned bodies have not carried out a proper investigation even as the incidents of violence against women are on the rise.

The reported cases of domestic violence and eviction have increased in the district of late.

Recently, Pushpa Swarnakar, a single woman of Rajbiraj-5, was mercilessly beaten by Ashish Singh of Sakarpura.

According to the locals, Swarnakar was beaten following a minor dispute. She has been undergoing treatment at Gajendra Narayan Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital.

Swarnakar’s husband died some 15 years ago. She has been working as a daily wage earner to raise her 12-year-old son. According to the victim, Singh and his family have been beating her up over minor issues for the last two years.

She alleged that the police took no action against Singh because he has a political patronage.

Rights activists and vice chair of the National Unity Campaign Sunita Shah said they were taking initiative to provide her justice.

“We have reached the hospital and informed the police about the condition of the victim. Now we are proceeding with the legal process,” said Shah.

However, the police have not shown any interest in the case.

Though the cases of violence against women have been increasing in recent years, a majority of them are not registered in the court.
