Two groups of protesters, mostly members of All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNSFU)protested against New Delhi’s unilateral decision to build a road to Mansarover through territory, which Nepal claims to be its. What happened?

On Friday, India announced the inauguration of a road from Dharchula to Lipulekh with an aim to provide a smooth ride for pilgrims headed to Kaiash Mansarovar. The newly inaugurated road passes through Lipulekh, a disputed territory, which have been claimed by both nations to be theirs.

In 2019, after India scrapped Section 370 of its constitution which accorded the Indian state of Kashmir a special status, it released a new political map. In its map, India integrated regions such as Kalapani, Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, areas East of Kali River in Indian territory, which Nepal believes to be its territory. Dialogues to resolve the dispute were ongoing, and India’s unilateral decision to construct a road on disputed territory is a violation of the agreement, and has escalated diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

Youths, especially belonging to student groups staged protests in Kathmandu valley, demanding action from Nepal government.
