Teachers of various schools across the country have demanded that vaccine against the coronavirus be provided to both teaching and non-teaching staffs of schools before they resume in-person classes.
The teachers warned that they would not attend in-person classes if the government deprived them of the vaccines. Putting forward 34-point demand, the CNT, or Confederation of Nepalese Teachers, umbrella organisation of 14 different teachers’ organisations, has been in digital protest.
Purna Prasad Dawadi, CNT acting chairperson, said the vaccine for teachers is essential because they have to work in crowded places, which are among the riskiest areas, but that the teachers will continue with their academic and non-academic works virtually until that happens.
Similarly, the teachers have also demanded for 10-day leave, which has been recently granted to tourism workers and civil servants.
The CNT has also accused the federal government of wanting to pass their burden on local governments stating that they should bear Rs. 7,000 of the Rs. 15,000 salary of Early Child Development (ECD) teachers and schools’ assistants. “The federal government must provide all of that amount from its coffers,” the Confederation stated.
Likewise, it has also asked the government to create a conducive environment wherein all community school students could attend classes virtually during the period of the pandemic.
Organising a virtual meet on Thursday, CNT warned that they would even close schools if their demand fell on the deaf ears.
