Transport workers announce public transport strike in Kathmandu from Tuesday; riot in Balaju area


The Balaju area of Kathmandu has become tense after the protesting transportation workers burned down police vans and a temporary police office.

The agitating transport workers, who were protesting against traffic police rules and fines, set fire to a police van, vandalized another vehicle and burned road dividers. They also demolished and set fire to the temporary police post at Machhapokhari Chowk.

The protesters had blocked the roads in the Balaju area, not allowing them to ply even private vehicles, since today afternoon stating that the traffic fines are expensive and the government has been indifferent towards their demands.

Nepal Transport Workers’ Union has announced to shut down public transport in Kathmandu Valley from today, accusing the government of not implementing the agreement which was earlier reached between the transport workers and the government.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protestors and, in response, the demonstrators pelted stones at the police.
