The first statute convention of the main opposition CPN-UML is going to kick off from Friday at Godawari-based Sunrise Assembly Hall.
The three-day-long convention is aimed at making amendments to the party’s statute. It will also decide on the party’s guiding principles.
The party has completed all necessary preparations for the convention, UML’s statute convention main management committee stated.
Organising a press meet here on Thursday, the committee informed that party chairman KP Sharma Oli would inaugurate the first statute convention on Friday.
Party media coordinator Khim Lal Bhattarai said three proposals, political report, proposal related to party organisation and proposal related to amendment to party statute are scheduled to be tabled in the convention for discussion.
The political proposal, proposal of party organisation and statute amendment proposal would be presented by chairman Oli, general secretary Ishwar Pokhrel and secretary Bishnu Paudel respectively, he added.
According to him, the proposals would be submitted after the inauguration and a group discussion would be held on the second day.
Bhattarai said that about 6,000 delegates from all over the country would participate in the assembly.
Shedding lights on the purpose of the convention, party standing committee member and Bagmati Province in-charge Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’, who is also the coordinator of the committee, said the convention would prepare the basis for the party’s ideology, policy and ideological basis.
Thapa further informed the statute amendment draft had also proposed retirement age of 70 years and two-term limitation for those working in executive bodies.
“The statute convention is aimed at strengthening the UML and making it people-oriented,” Thapa said.
Speaking at another programme organised by All Nepal Women’s Association here on Thursday, party general secretary Ishwar Pokhrel said the party had been convening its first statue convention to discuss the political ideology.
A separate statue convention is set to take place, after the leaders during the last general convention realised a need of separate conventions to hold discussion on political issues and electing new leadership, he added.
The party leaders realised that discussing too many issues in the General Convention left an inadequate time to discuss political issues, he added.
He also assured that 33 per cent women participation would be guaranteed in the party central committee.
