The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by the post-monsoon rains has reached 94 as of Thursday evening, according to the Home Ministry.
The unseasonal rainfall, which occurred following the withdrawal of monsoon, caused heavy loss of life and property in more than 20 districts. It destroyed physical infrastructure and also caused heavy damage to harvest-ready paddy crops worth millions of rupees.
As per the Home Ministry, Province 1 saw the highest deaths at 57 followed by Sudurpaschim with 29 deaths, Karnali with deaths and Bagmati one. In Province 1, Panchthar recorded the highest number of deaths at 28 followed by Ilam with 13 deaths.
Likewise, seven people died in Dhankuta, five in Sunsari, two in Udayapur and one each in Morang and Bhojpur. In Sudurpaschim, Doti recorded the highest death at 16 followed by Bajhang with eight fatalities. Four died in Baitadi, one in Dadeldhura, six each in Humla and one in Kalikot.
The data by the Home Ministry, however, contradicts the records with the Nepal Police, which reported 101 deaths by Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the weather has improved throughout the country following the withdrawal of the rain-causing system from the eastern part. Most of the areas across the country, including Kathmandu valley, witnessed sunny weather since yesterday.
According to senior meteorologist Barun Poudel, it’s unlikely that another weather system will develop in four or five days from now.
The combined influence of the low pressure system over Bihar of India and the westerly system had caused heavy rainfall throughout the country from October 17 to 20. “Such system leaves behind water vapor and moisture. That’s why clouds and fog are seen in some places.
There are also chances of intermittent rain at some places,” said Poudel, adding, “This, however, will not make a big impact.”
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Meteorological Forecasting Division said the weather was partly to generally cloudy throughout the country as light rainfall took place at one or two places of Province 1 and Bagmati Province.
There is the possibility of light rain at a few places of Province 1, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places of other provinces.
