Root 132 not out, England 314-5 in 2nd test vs. India

(AP) — Joe Root made his 22nd test century and took his career tally beyond 9,000 runs in the format Saturday as England moved to 314-5 by tea on Day 3 of the second test against India, which was just 50 runs ahead at Lord’s.

Root was 132 not out and had been joined in the middle by Moeen Ali, who was on 20.

England lost two wickets in the second session, with Jonny Bairstow (57) succumbing by going too early on a pull shot and gloving the ball up in the air to Virat Kohli at slip off the bowling of Mohammed Siraj.

Jos Buttler, who never looked entirely comfortable, was bowled for 23 by Ishant Sharma and England was 283-5 in its first innings at that stage.

Root reached the fifth century of a prolific year. It is his second in as many innings against India in the past week and his fourth at Lord’s.

India made 364 in the first innings.

The rain-hit first test was drawn.
