Swimmer prodigy Singh wins first gold of 9th National Games


Nepal’s swimming prodigy Gaurika Singh won her first gold medal of the 9th National Games as Duana Lama and Nasir Yahya Hussain again scripted their name in the national record book on Sunday.

Singh playing from Nepal Army defended her 100m backstroke gold with a time of 1:05.50 minutes. Ashley Sapkota Dangol from NRNA had to satisfy with the silver medal after finishing the race in 1:08.79. Anushiya Tandukar with a time of 1:13.80 claimed the bronze medal.

Singh won 12 gold medals during the eight editions of the multi-sport event. This time she walked over from four events being unwell. After pulling out from 100m freestyle and 200m backstrokes on Saturday, Singh quit 800m and 200m freestyle today.

After competing in the heat round, Singh opted out of the 200-meter freestyle. Singh fell behind Duana Lama in the heat event by a couple of seconds. Duana clocked 2:16.34 while Singh timed 2:18.71 to finish the race.

Army’s Hussain clinched two gold medals with a national record today. He won the men’s 200m individual medley gold and 200m freestyle with a national record. He took 2:11.04 to complete the 200m individual medley at the front. He improved his record of 2:11.85.

Aashish Sapkota of NRNA took the silver with a time of 2:13.98. Sauren Singh of Bagmati Province covered the race in 2:19.91 to claim the bronze medal.

Hussain broke the record of 1:55.48 set by Army’s Alex Shah with a time of 1:55.39 seconds in the 200m freestyle. Shah was satisfied with a silver medal after clocking 1:55.48 to cover the race.

Shah won the gold medal in men’s 100m freestyle.

Likewise, Duana Lama of the Army also improved her national record to win the gold in women’s 50m breaststroke. Lama bettered her three-year-old record time of 35.46 set during the 13th SAG. She finished with a time of 35.23 secs to win the gold medal.

Royal Prajapati of APF clocked 35.80 secs for the silver medal. Upasti Maharjan of the Army pocketed the bronze with a time of 35.52.
