Team Nepal in Sydney – to play against the Socceroos on 10th October in Canberra

Nepal’s national football team have landed in Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport for their much awaited match against the Socceroos in Canberra on the 10th of October, 2019. The national team is being captained by goalkeeper Kiran Chemjong.

The match is being played as a part of the Preliminary Joint Qualifiication Round 2 for Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023. Announced in August, Nepal was placed in Group B along with Australia, Kuwait, Jordan and Chinese Taipei. They have played two matches Kuwait 7 : 0 Nepal and Chinese Taipei 0 : 2 Nepal. With one loss (Kuwait) and one win (Chinese Taipei), Nepal is at 3 points.

Nepal’s match with Australia will be the third match for Nepal national team in the second round of  FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers. The team will spend six days in Sydney before heading off to Canberra to meet their counterparts in Gio Stadium on the 10th.

Road to World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023:

Between September 2019 and June 2020, Nepal will play eight matches in total– four at home & four away. A total of 12 teams, the eight group winners and the four best runners-up, will then advance to the final round of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup to be held in China PR.

The four best teams in the final qualifying round will secure a spot at the World Cup and a fifth team will go to the intercontinental play‑offs – the journey is long but not impossible.
