Christchurch Terror Attack: 49 shot dead

Mass shooting at two mosques in Christchurch of New Zealand has resulted in multiple fatalities. According to the latest update, forty-nine people are dead and further forty-eight are injured in attacks that took place during Friday prayer at two mosques.

Among the dead, forty-one were killed in Al Noor mosque and seven in Linwood Islamic Centre, while another victim died in Christchurch hospital. Forty-eight people including children are being treated at the same hospital.

Police uncovered explosive devices which were attached to cars. The attacker identified himself as Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian, before live streaming himself attacking a mosque. New Zealand police has urged not to share the distressing video in social media and televisions.

A person in his 20s has been arrested and charged with murder. He will appear in Christchurch court tomorrow. While his name has not been revealed yet, three other suspects are being investigated. The suspects were not known to the police.

The terror attack has been labelled as the “Darkest day” by New Zealand’s prime minister, Jacinda Arden. According to New Zealand’s police commissioner Mike Bush, the attack was well planned.

Australian Prime minister, Scott Morrison, has assured despite the main suspect being an Australian, terror threat level in Australia has not changed and necessary steps has already been taken.

Following the attack, a series of tweets by Queensland senator Fraser Anning suggesting the attack as a result of immigration has received criticism from both sides of Australian parliament.

While hundreds of mourners gathered together for evening prayers at Lakemba mosque in Sydney to pray for the victims of the attack.
