Indian government has scrapped off article 370 of the Indian constitution. The article provided a special autonomous power to the people of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The scrapping was proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Upper house on Monday.
The decision to remove the article from Indian constitution comes when the Kashmir turmoil echoed in the Rajya Sabha, questioning the government for the current situation in Kashmir.
Indian government imposing the section 144 of the constitution has shut down the services of the internet network in several districts in Kashmir. Regional political leaders, including the former chief minister are reported to have been under house arrest, while educational institutions are closed. The central government has deployed 100 companies of central forces around the regions for counter-insurgency attack.
The article 370 of Indian Constitution is a temporary provision that gives the state a special status of autonomy, allowing only the residents to buy property and hold state government jobs. It was drafted by Gopalaswami Ayyangar.
