Julian Assange arrested from Ecuadorian Embassy

April 11, 2019

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested from Ecuadorian Embassy at London. His arrest was followed after the withdrawal of his asylum by Ecuadorian government. He had been living in the Embassy for seven years.

Assange was removed from the embassy by British police on behalf of the US. The arrest was captured only by Russian media ‘Ruptly’.

Rafael Correa, who was Ecuadorian president when Assange was granted asylum has condemned the move of present president, Lenin Moreno. He has accused Moreno of being a traitor allowing British police to enter into the embassy and arresting Assange.

Assange’s lawyer, Jen Robinson has confirmed that he has been arrested on the grounds of the breach of bail conditions and US extradition request.

Speaking to BBC News, Assange’s one of the lawyers, Geoffrey Robertson said, “It is breach of international law. Ecuador will be blackballed from international society for doing this. You can’t give someone asylum for seven years and then hand them over, which is what Ecuador has done. It is a cruel and astounding breach of faith on the part of the Ecuadorian government. They are keen to get loans from the United States and they have done the United States’ bidding. The charges they want to extradite him on carry very long years in prison. Chelsea Manning was given 35 years in prison. The charges for Julian Assange add up to 45 years, that’s the not the death penalty. But it may in effect be the death penalty for someone of Mr Assange’s age and health problems.”

Tweeting about the arrest, Edward Snowden has expressed, “the United Nations formally ruled his detention to be arbitrary, a violation of human rights. They have repeatedly issued statements calling for him to walk free–including very recently.”

Assange is due to appear in Westminster magistrates court today, about 2 pm local time.
