Monsoon havoc displaces 1,675 in Jumla


Three Rural Municipalities of Jumla, which have suffered the most damages in the floods and landslides triggered by the recent rains, have asked the federal government to declare the district as crisis-hit region.

A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) held at the District Administration Office Thursday requested the federal government to provide relief and conduct rescue and rehabilitation works in Kanakasundari, Hima and Sinja rural municipalities of Jumla.

According to the Section 32 of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act 2074, the DDMC held a meeting on Thursday and recommended the Home Ministry to help declare ward No. 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 of Kanaksundari, Hima, Sinja and Tatopani Rural Municipalities as crisis-hit wards.

Similarly, the ward numbers of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 of Tila Rural Municipality, 1, and 2 of Guthichaur Rural Municipality and ward No. 3 of Patarashi Rural Municipality had also asked the government to declare their areas as crisis-hit wards, according to CDO Mukehs Kumar Keshari.

The meeting has also identified that 1,675 people have been displaced by floods and landslides in the district. According to Pramila Rijal, Assistant Chief District Officer and Information Officer of the district, 316 houses were completely damaged, 440 houses were at high risk of damage, and 726 houses suffered partial damages.

According to the DAO, 10 people lost their lives in the floods and landslides in Jumla and one person has gone missing. According to the data of the DAO, Hima, Sinja and Kanakasundari Rural Municipalities suffered the most damages this time.

However, the complete details of the damages are yet to come. The Karnali Highway has been blocked because of the continuous rains and floods since October 5. (Source : TRN)
