Samples of 70 party attendees collected after host tests postive for Covid-19

Baglung, Nepal: A family’s celebration of the birth of their new child has health authorities scramble for party attendees after its host tested positive for Covid-19.

On 17th August, 2020, the family of the new-born daughter hosted a ‘Pasni’ (name assigning ceremony) which was attended by at least 70 people in their home in Baglung, Nepal. Attendees, who comprised of family members and friends, disregarded prohibitory orders and health advice and gathered in a large number. It is reported several including the father also travelled via other adjoining districts to be a part of the festivities.

The father tested positive for Covid-19 on August 17, which has triggered authorities in Baglung to conduct a wide-scaled contact tracing and testing. Swab samples of 70 people who attended the party have been collected, and their results are awaited.

The party also put the health of the newborn at risk – swab sample of the 22 day old baby has also been collected, and her result is awaited. Some of the family members are also reported to have complained of symptoms such as fever and difficulty in breathing.
